We can help
Sleep by Zier Institute can help!
Zier Institute’s sleep program focuses on the sleep-deprivation behaviors of children and adolescents. We explore what behavior patterns that “charge” your battery and consequently what patterns “drain” your battery.
While environmental exploration is a critical component to healthy sleep, our sleep program dives into mindfulness exploration, sensory strategies, and emotion work:
- 8 basic emotions
- Emotions & action urges
- Judgments vs. facts
- Honor your feelings
- Wise mind
- Anxiety
- Strategies for calming the body & mind
Why you need sleep
After busy days of learning, physical activities, social time, no matter the age – our bodies need a break. Sleep allows our bodies to refuel for the next day.
How Much Sleep?
Sleep is an individual thing and some kids need more than others. Experts agree that kids need 10 or 11 hours each night. When you don’t get enough sleep, you are likely to feel more emotional, less social, unable to follow directions, and you are more likely to get sick.
A+ Sleep Habits
Children who struggle with sleep disorders or disordered breathing, are more likely to have problems with attention. Poor sleep habits can lead to “significant functional impairment at school,” according to a study published in Sleep Journal.
Your Brain needs ZZZs
Your brain also needs sleep to use this downtime to store information, replace chemicals, and solve problems. The brain is also busy repeating the five stages of sleep each night.
In Your Dreams
Dreams are our brain’s sophisticated way of allowing us to learn and process emotional issues as we sleep. While dreams often make no sense to our conscious mind, they may be organizing memories and emotions while ridding our brain of the junk and storing the important stuff.
Stress Less
One frequent side effect of childhood anxiety is worsened sleep. The more help kids receive in managing their anxiety, the better they will sleep. Likewise, the more support they receive toward a healthy sleep routine, the less anxious they may feel.
Exploring Routines
As Pediatric Occupational Therapists, we give your family the tools they need to improve on sleep quantity and quality. We center these tools around your child’s profile, behavior, and current habits, while exploring changes to their routines.
